We’ve all struggled with anxiety one way or another, right?! If you haven’t, then please do share your secrets with the rest of us! In this week’s blog post, I’ve decided to write about anxiety and specifically share my personal experience of overcoming anxiety as well as the methods that have worked for my clients.
According to the APA, anxiety is an emotion characterized by feelings of tension, worried thoughts and physical changes like increased blood pressure. However, it’s so much more than that. If anxiety isn’t properly managed, it could become very detrimental to both mental health and physical health. Chronic worry and stress has been linked to so many life-threatening diseases like cardiovascular disease and even various types of cancer.
For those of you that have been following my blog since the beginning may remember that I struggled with anxiety freshman year of college. The struggles of finding a healthy balance of being a college freshman at ASU, maintaining a part-time job, and having time for myself became too real so I knew that I needed to do something about it. The key that really helped me get a handle of my anxiety early on was being aware of the fact that I was struggling so then I was prepared to take action. For me, it was yoga and mindfulness meditation that really helped me become more centered and really learn how to manage the multiple stressors that I was dealing with on a daily basis.
The clients that I work with are youth and young adults ages 15 to 21. I personally love this transitional age because I think it’s such an influential time of life. A lot of my clients have come from adverse backgrounds and without a doubt they have struggled with both mental and physical health issues. However, with trust and dedication a lot of my clients have been able to overcome issues with anxiety by learning how to find balance in their lives by using healthy coping techniques. I was able to help my clients redirect their negative energy into something enjoyable that’s positive and productive by helping them explore their passions and interests.
There’s so many ways to successfully overcome anxiety by simply using healthy coping techniques. Whether you decide to use a problem-focused coping mechanism or an emotion-focused mechanism, what’s important is that you find what truly works for you. See my post on How to Cope Effectively for more information. As always, I’d love to hear your feedback and I’m also interested in hearing what’s helped you overcome struggles with anxiety.
Stay healthy!
